synaesthesia Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 2 file servers, both 2012 R2. Dedupe enabled on both, on background optimization. File server 1, users drive (E:). Capacity 1.8TB. Used 591GB. Deduplication saves 346GB which is 36%. File server 2. Users drive (E:). Capacity 1.2TB. Used 925GB. Deduplication saves 2.43GB which is 0%. Both users/home directories. Both healthy NTFS volumes. Dedupe is enabled, background optimization working OK. There's no difference in how they're set up or working, shares or permissions yet 0% on server 2 is clearly wrong. Is there anything I can look at to see what's preventing dedupe? Everything seems normal other than the rate!
synaesthesia Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 No, they're identical. Same sort of thing - home directories. It's just user drives. Server 1 holds some year groups, server 2 holds staff and other year groups. If anything, due to staff home folders, there should be better savings (PDF files etc)

Optimization job on volume E: (\\?\Volume{731d23c9-dbcf-11e1-8353-000c294d003d}\) was configured with insufficient memory. System memory percentage: 25 Available memory: 3071 MB Minimum required memory: 15842916 MB It wants 15 (is that right?) TB of RAM to dedupe it....
synaesthesia Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 So that gave me something to actually search for, and this is something to watch out for if anyone hits this issue. We'd applied disk quota's across the board for that drive as it's for users, and it'd included the NTAUTHORITY/SYSTEM user. Removing the quota for said user resolved the issue immediately, it's now optimizing properly
