Microsoft has launched AmIRunningXP.com, which, as the name implies, will tell you if your computer is running Windows XP. While this is obviously a simple question, it could provide useful information for an uneducated user to see if his or her machine is running the outdated operating system. If nothing else, it’s a bit of fun for Microsoft to help spread the message that Windows XP will soon being going away and now is the time to move to a modern platform. (Source)

A bit off topic but that reminds me of the time I was helping someone over the phone, it was Windows 98 and I asked her to double click My Computer and she said "what, your computer?" I couldn't stop laughing, I think she hung up in the end.

I've got W7 but with classic start menu, no aero and a few other tweaks, it looks like XP. Now if only I could get it to behave like XP (a search that works and the speed I used to enjoy).

If your win 7 install is slower than XP on any modern PC (that's anything core2duo and above) something is wrong with it. I hear you on the search though, which still hasn't improved in 8.

I'm glad that, running a network with almost 1000 windows XP clients, they don't do this... I can't change until at least the summer due to budget and back end infrastructure changes that have to happen first.

Nope... But I am disabling the ancient version of IE, forcing chrome which is patched up to date automatically, tightening firewall and filtering restrictions on what can be downloaded by ordinary users and enforcing a full virus scan on insertion of any removable devices.

 

The situation is not ideal, but it's been forced by budget.

As annoying as that update will be it will hopefully annoy the people who "love XP" into giving up and letting me upgrade their machine.
