RM Tutor 4 - On vanilla network.

Hi Guys,

 

We've got RM Tutor install on our network, vanilla windows 7, upon opening it decides to connect to every PC, (I've found a fix for this on the RM site, not yet implemented) however we would like the teacher pc to only show PCs in the room that they are teaching in. Is this possible? I've seem RM Location Link mentioned but does this work on a vanilla network. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

Have you looked on the NetSupport website - RM Tutor 4 is their rebadged product.

 

You can do what you're asking with the use of profiles, but it's 18 months since I touched it - moved to Impero - so I can't remember how we did it.

If I remember rightly Location Link never worked so you had to go in manually and set up the teachers station with a config file. Can't remember all the ins and outs as haven't dealt with it for 3 years!

Update to RM tutor 5, it fixes all the problems. Location link update also helps.

 

5 has so many useful features too

Does location link work on a vanilla network, do I not need RMMC? I've been looking & found it starts up with a default layout stored in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Research Machines\RM Tutor 4

 

however can't find a reg/ini file that relates to this? Anyone got a clue of the steps to configure this manually?

Must admit, I thought RM Tutor 5 was only for use on a CC4 network, but I might be mistaken since it's been a few years now since I ran a RM network

I've cracked it, if anyone ever wants to do it, follow steps below.

 

Log on to local machine as an admin,

Open rm tutor & set up your room,

Go into config & select to connect to known students at start up (tick box)

Copy the RM TUTOR 4 folder here C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Research Machines\

Paste somewhere on the network & name with the room name, it ITROOM1

Repeat as necessary for your other rooms.

 

Set up a batch file to copy files from the correct folder for the room your in, to the other users appdata folder at logon.

Set up as a local logon script on the teacher machine.

 

Repeat for the other rooms.

 

 

 

I'm not sure if this is the best way or the fastest way, but it works. Have set up two of our 6 rooms this way this morning & it is working. On to the rest.

I'm not sure if this is the best way or the fastest way, but it works.

Pretty much what I did - but - there is a reg key you can set so that all these settings/locations are per PC, not per User.

 

Then you only need a one-time or startup script instead if login script which is much more suitable.

 

Unfortunately I can't remember it, but it's something like 'UseHKLM' which you put as a custom reg policy in user types in RMMC.

Actually...

 

I think now you've got SSUseHKLM, there's a key which says something like Room="\room.ini"

 

Therefore I think I just had one, READ-ONLY, copy of each rooms files on a network share (RMPublic>RMTutor), which this regkey pointed to.
