Anyone installed ruckus 9.7 yet?

Has anyone installed 9.7 on their zone directors yet? Just looking for issues that may arise or have arisen so far? I'm always cautious when installing brand new updates....

Is there something in the 9.7 released that you really want or any bug fixes in it that you need? If so, then backup, try it after hours first and if it breaks roll it back.

 

I took a pass on this current release as there were some problems that resulted on the first build being pulled and issues with upgrading the Zone Director in some cases. I'm going to sit it out for a while before upgrading. Other schools here seem to be doing the same. If it works, don't break it.

We upgraded and it resolved a reliability issue. works just fine, no issues.

I want to do it to take advantage of the features only available to 9.7 on iOS app like renaming APs etc also would like to test what else is available through the iOS app

 

And also want to use the bonjour gateway feature...

Has anyone compared the bonjour gateway in the 9.7 release to a wide area bonjour setup? We set up wide area bonjour (non-multicast) and it has been very reliable. The initial setup was a bit of a dog, but since it's done I don't know the bonjour gateway would give us anything. Might be less effective?

Sorry, could you explain a 'wide area bonjour (non multicast)' please? I'm not sure what you're talking about, to be able to answer the question.

 

The 9.7 release listens for specified Bonjour traffic (eg AirPlay in our scenario) on one VLAN and rebroadcasts it on another VLAN.

 

You can create more than one rule, say for more VLANs or for AirPrint.

 

(Edit: The ZD doesn't need to know about the VLANs, ie they don't have to be wifi VLANs - we use it for AirPlay traffic from our PCs running AirServer on PC VLANs)

Wide Area Bonjour is usually implemented with unicast DNS Service Discovery (DNS-SD). It means you aren't routing multicast traffic across subnets (which defeats the purpose).

It's a pain in the rear to setup initially, but very reliable. We are only using it for AirPrint currently. The ability to rebroadcast AirPlay from one subnet to another with the Ruckus bonjour gateway is interesting though. I assume it is using some sort of bonjour proxy to accomplish this. Have you analysed your network traffic to see what the effect is on the VLANs you rebroadcast the traffic on, and the load on the ZD Or APs themselves? I just wonder if it puts strain on them or floods the VLAN with multicast traffic.
