VHD Boot

Has anyone tried booting from a VHD in Win8?

 

I had thoughts about running VHDs as the system drive coz it would be a snap with regard to 'imaging' and updates.

Or is this a seriously bad idea?

I have my system as dual boot with windows 7 installed on the actual hard drive and windows 8.1 booting from the VHD which resides in a folder on the hard drive. Was easy enough to install windows 8 onto a vhd from windows 7 using the instructions from Microsoft.

as above got a suite of pcs default boot to windows 8.1 on a vhd with win7 installed natively on the hdd. Piece of cake though i manually installed win8.1 from pen not sure if you could mdt/wds that easily/at all

I assume doing this is as simple as copying a vhd to all the computers? But how does that work with Computer Name .. is it just a case of renaming each one to suit?

Yes but run sysprep on the vhd before you copy it.
