I'm trying to install an application (Smart Notebook, in case that matters) but it fails to install, leaving the following error log in Event Viewer:

The install of application Education Software 2013 December Update from policy InstallSmartNotebook failed. The error was : This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service

Any ideas what that means?

Has the computer got all its updates? If not I would run that and try again. Or just download the latest version of Windows Installer?

(am I missing something here - the error is fairly clear, isn't it?)

The error does seem clear, except plenty of other applications install just fine. Also, I can manually install the MSI, just not via GPO.

I think it is to do with Windows Installer versions, after all. My PC (where I manually installed the MSI) has 4.5 but the PC on which I'm testing the installer only has 3 on it.

Anyone got a CC3 package (I know, I know...!) for Windows Installer 4.5?
