Web Filter / Firewall Alternatives

I have been asked to look at alternatives for Smoothwall what do you guys use?

 

We are a school of 1500 pupils, 950ish desktops and have students using BYOD. So looking for a system that can do user / group related policies and transparent filtering for our wireless networks along with maybe a built in VPN like smoothwall offers?

 

So far had a brief look at:

I'm afraid I can't help you there, We have our connection with @SchoolsBroadband so I haven't had to go direct to the lightspeed for anything @mdench

I've installed it in local cafe's wi-fi etc for Captive Portal - BYOD.

 

You have unlimited VPN on pfsense and transparent proxying, and it's a firewall too with good features. You can do firewall policies on it too. All you need is some hardware to run it on.

Lightspeed isn't a firewall though, simply just a filter.

 

We use Lightspeed and Fortinet at the moment. Fortinet has filtering within it, but it's one of those things it also does, it's not it's best feature to be honest. Fortinet firewalls are pretty robust, and they have a decent VPN solution too.

We are using a Fortinet firewall and Smoothwall. I originally put the fortinet in to replace a bloxx solution, but quickly found out that the filtering was not it's best feature. Then in a rush we put smoothwall in as it was cheaper than renewing Bloxx. quite like the smoothwall though

My prefernce would be the Cyberoam as it is very easy to use, very fast throughput and the support is comprehensive
