Saw this via FB, it is a page with Chinese translation about the killing of dolphin/whale creatures. Possibly old and nothing new.

(Warning: The links in this post have images of dolphin/whale killing in them.) Snopes says that they're whales, not dolphins, and that it's a Faroe Islands tradition. It's got nothing to do with coming of age, it's just a throwback to the days when the whole island would have had to have hunted whales like this in order to have enough food to survive. The Faroe Islands medical council has said since 2008 that the meat isn't fit for human consumption anyway, so it's possible that this no longer goes ahead.

 

Either way, like most things that get passed around facebook like this, the things said in that article aren't actually 100% true.

This has been popping up on my FB recently as well, mainly from animal-mad people who think everything in existence shoud hug and share and care give each other flowers all day. Damn hippies. Anyway, I detract from my point.

 

The info in the email/post/flyer/whatever is not at all accurate. The place talked about is not part of Denmark, it has it's own Principality. It's not dolphins they kill, it's whales (a member of the killer whale family). My reading into it says that since the 1700's they annually cull 0.1% of the local population of the whales for meat, though perhaps not for their own consumtion any more, and also to keep the population of their fish from being dwindled by the number of whales as well.

 

OK, they go about it in quite a nasty way, but how do you nicely perform a cull on animal population, especially one that lives in water? And many places such as supermarkets and fast food chains in the UK do this every day; how do you think we get meat in supermarkets, or that Big Mac you munched for your lunch? If you've ever seen the documentary on how fast food places & farmers kept their battery chickens you'd probably be put off meat for a while.

 

I think this is a prime example of "Just becuase it is on the Internet doesn't mean it's true".

Like that make a difference? It is a barbaric practice, with no place on a planet that we have to share with other intelligent, playful creatures.
