Bloody Google Phones!

Just got a Nexus 5, nice phone been using for a couple of weeks now.

Just been sent my phone bill and see I've been charged loads of money for texts, now thats odd as i get unlimited texts.

So go to the website to see my bill and work out why I've been charged,

turns out using Hangouts if you send a message to a group of people it changes the message to mms instead of sending sms (which are free)

In a sub menu of a sub menu you can change it so you can send group sms messages so changed it now but too late for my bill

 

rant over, hope someone else see's this before they do it as well.

If you're on Three you can cap your phone meaning you can't go over your limit. I disabled messages and hangout integration when it asked me though so there is deffo a way to disable it!

i've no idea why they'd convert it to an MMS instead of an SMS but i've just changed my settings too.

All android phones do it or similar.

Mine defaults to MMS for multipart messages as well.

SMS doesn't support multiple recipients, so if you use group messaging with SMS it send one text per recipient. If you are charged for SMS then this could work out more expensive than sending a single MMS, which does support multiple recipients. With MMS, replies are also sent to everyone in the original group message. This won't happen with SMS.

My old Symbian phone done it too. The practice is older than android's. Simple fix though if you prefer it the other way

Also not all phones receive the text in an MMS, I sent out a few group messages and about 50% of them were not showing up, mainly on iphones though!

 

switched it to SMS and all works fine.
