andy_b Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Oh yes. We have especially suffered from GMail -> Zimbra. So since the new SPAM filter upgrade has anyone noticed a significant lag in the time external emails are taking to come through? I am on O365 but we have a local server for Spiceworks. A member of staff sent me an email at 9:50 this morning and cc'ed the helpdesk; Spiceworks did not receive the message until 13:00. This has only been happening since the half term upgrade and nothing has been changed at our end.
foofighterjim Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Good to hear it is not just us then, but on the other hand this is now something else that has gone wrong on the upgrade front from them.
Michael Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 It's an interesting new tool and Link2ICT are right, it should in theory reduce the volume of spam over time. Unfortunately however it will cause massive disruption for users - presumably just users on Zimbra when sending/receiving mail and not Office 365 when using OWA? One user has commented that their internal e-mails to colleagues are delayed... yet you'd think all school domains in Birmingham would be whitelisted?
andy_b Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Still have lots of users complaining about delayed emails. Re-reading the KB article, it states: Most legitimate mail servers will wait between one to four hours and try again I wonder what percentage most represents? As we have users waiting 12 hrs and still not receiving the email they expect.
Michael Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Also: Grey listing occurs when a external mail server tries to send mail to our mail servers, and this mail server has not sent mail to our mail servers before. The sending mail server is told that at the current time our mail server cannot service the request and to try again later. So when an e-mail is sent from an external source (for the first time), what actually happens to it? It's grey listed Link2ICT's end, but as far as I'm concerned it's sent my end. Why would any mail server re-send the same e-mail? I'm failing to understand how this concept works and clearly it's not just me.
Little-Miss Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I've not long received your original email @Michael!
Michael Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I sent it at 13:18, so if you've not long received it - that's approx. 7 hours waiting time from Office 365. Blimey!
Michael Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 So clearly it's sort of working, but I've just sent @Little-Miss a test e-mail at 20:34. Did you get it pretty much instantly?
Michael Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 So it took 16 minutes to get from Office 365 to Zimbra, despite it being the second e-mail... interesting. Surely, surely it shouldn't take any more than 30-60 seconds max for any e-mail to arrive at its destination (taking into consideration everything's setup correctly and working)! Might be worth Link2ICT taking note of this example, considering it's out of hours. E-mail flows should be relatively low.
Michael Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 On a related note, you'll shortly receive the new costings from Link2ICT for numerous services, but I've noticed on page 1 that the agreement is for three years when previously it was for one year. Obviously this has big implications if your school decide to change various parts of your service away from Link2ICT now or in the future due to this new agreement.

I feel an argument brewing within (not that I need an excuse to have an argument)! My paperwork still hasn't come through but you would imagine that the scenario @Michael paints it the reason for them trying to lock schools in. Out of interest Michael has there been much of a reduction over last years costs?
Michael Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I feel an argument brewing within (not that I need an excuse to have an argument)! My paperwork still hasn't come through but you would imagine that the scenario @Michael paints it the reason for them trying to lock schools in. Out of interest Michael has there been much of a reduction over last years costs? Yes and no. The 10Mbps link is priced based on pupil numbers, but generally speaking, everything else has gone up slightly. 100Mbps is the same for any Primary.
jamin100 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 We have our account manger coming out next week and may receive an ear bashing about this. We have had quotes now to move away from link2ict and I do believe that we will as the service has got even worse and the price when compared to other suppliers for the same service is expensive
Michael Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Apparently you can have 12 months, but it certainly isn't presented that way! I think the idea behind it is to fix prices for three years, but if you agree to fix prices then you essentially are agreeing to a three year deal.
Little-Miss Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Oh! Haven't seen ours yet. This I'm guessing is where I have to make the decision to go O365 or not...
jamin100 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 We manage to only go into contract for 6 months at a time. No idea how
foofighterjim Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Its going to make the conference interesting! @Little-Miss
Michael Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Oh! Haven't seen ours yet. This I'm guessing is where I have to make the decision to go O365 or not... Yep exactly - but I'm guessing a school your size - probably in the region of £400? In year 2 your costs are £0
Little-Miss Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Its going to make the conference interesting! @Little-Miss Yup. £400 for which @Michael? Zimbra?
Michael Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Yup. £400 for which @Michael? Zimbra? Yes - it varies from school to school based on pupil numbers. If you wanted me to do it I'd undercut whatever your charge is this year - it's up to you
Little-Miss Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 .............£400 Try £940.50.... I'd probably do it myself, seems straight forward enough. Will just poke you if i get stuck...
Michael Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Well I definitely think you need to make the move. That's a massive saving to make!
