I have a server with 7 Virtual Machines running on it.

What is the best way to back this up?

Is it possible to back up a server with running virtual machines on it (or do they need to be stopped?)

Or should each virtual machine server be performing its own backup.

At the moment just some shared files are being backed up to a external file server, which makes me wary if a virtual server was to fail or the server which hosts all the virtual servers was to fail.

Thanks for this. The machines are actually running in MSCVMM and not VMWare.

Would that still work as I can only see references saying it is for VMware and Hyper-V. Also does anyone have any idea of Pricing, as I could not easily find any prices advertised for it?

MSCVMM is still Hyper-V isn't it? Price on Veeam is negotiable (it was for us) and we got quite a good deal.

Edit: If you have System Center you could always use Data Protection Manager.
