All of our servers are currently physical, however we are hoping to move towards virtualisation in the future. In our current backup solution we backup to disc and then to tape weekly. I am looking at replacing the B2D storage as this hardware is quite old, unreliable and is running out of space. It is a HP storageworks disc array connected to our file server so its purely just a storage devise. These seem to be reasonably priced and we could buy a new similar one with greater storage however I have noticed there are dedicated backup storage devices available such as EMC Data domain, which allows for de-duplication and could be beneficial as we currently have just below 2 TB of data in a full backup. Could anybody recommend any solutions or technologies for me to look further into? Thanks
zag Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 My advice is to forget tapes, that's old technology. Personally we have a single backup server in a different physical location in the school. All backups are done to Disk drive using Veeam. It de duplicates things and only uses about 10gb a night for our 18 servers. Takes about 20mins in total but we do use SSD drives as well so its a lot quicker with them. If you really need to take data offsite or lock it in safes, then just use external or hot swapable hard disks. 1

twin--turbo Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Microsoft DPM will do disk to disk, can't say it's my favoutite thing in the world but you may find it's cheaper than BE. We do cross site backups between our two sites 5M appart. Rob 1
