Hey all,

 

Having some REALLY big problems with our network, I'm really not network savvy so all of this is a learning curve for me.

About a month ago our network kept dipping out for all wireless machines. The network would be down for 5 minutes and then backup for half an hour.

 

Just invested in a NetGear R6250 which is supposed to hold 10 machines. After adding 2 machines, we started getting frequent dips but the old router (Still connected as well) doesn't dip as often as it used to.

I literally just reconnected and got this on my machine (Myself and a dummy machine were connected):

On another note, we run a VPN to get to our server which is hosted in Maidstone. Using OPENVPN.

 

Not sure whatelse to do.

Edit:

 

So a friend of mine over skype has been helping me, we've set my IP to a static 192.168.1.222 to avoid conflict.

 

It SEEMS to be working

Have you bought a router to use as a WAP? You'll need to put it into Access Point mode or similar - I suspect you have clashing DHCP servers, as well as routing going on where it may not be desired!

If my understand of WAP is that it's an Access point for all wireless machines to use to connect to the same network as the wired machines then yes :p

 

How do I check if the DHCP Servers are clashing?

Do you know what current DHCP servers you have running (for instance, I have one server which manages DHCP for our whole range)? Log onto the routers/WAPs via the web interface and see if they're set to dish out DHCP too, and if they're not supposed to - switch the feature off.

 

You will have issues if you routers as APs in router mode - they're expecting to route traffic between ranges which they won't be required to do, as well as dishing out services like DHCP that can cause a right mess.

 

Basically, if you need wireless access points; it's best to buy dedicated WAPs, not wireless routers.

I changed my IP to a static, out of range .222 and it's perfectly fine now :D

I have an update.

 

Every now and again the network will just kickout... It will require a restart using http://192.168.1.1
