How to transfer data from one iPhone to a new one

Got the "you know about technology, give us a hand" call the other day, and soon found out that this Apple malarkey isn't as straightforward as everyone makes out. Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong?

 

Friend has old iPhone and wants to transfer everything to his new one. Plug in Phone A and make backup. Unplug and plug in Phone B, which autosyncs. Restore from backup - then Phone B reboots and syncs against its first (empty) sync! Repeat ad nauseam.

 

Is there a way to delete Phone B (or its data) from iTunes, then add it back in without it autosyncing before the Phone A data is restored to it?

My post is going to be much help but the above reason is why I decided to never use an apple product and stick to android due to the flexibility of anroid

Do a full restore of phone B, making it reinstall iOS from scratch.

You should be able to get it to restore from the backup of Phone A

It did on the first restore (could see all the apps) but then it synced against it's own autosync and wiped it all. After that it just kept looping.

Unless this is automatically set up, he wouldn't have done it himself. Plus given how long the backup/restore took over USB I'm reluctant to try any cloud solutions!

It is automatic on new iPhones, but on the older iPhones, I think you have to set it up, but only takes 2 seconds to setup (I'd leaving it running over night like as it takes a while longer to back up)

 

but once you have backed up your old phone, just go onto the new phone and log into iCloud and select that backup as a restore

I managed to turn off autosyncing, which didn't seem to help. However, it turns out that when you set up your new phone you ignore the "restore from backup" option and go for "set up as new phone" and once that's done you THEN restore.

 

Grrrrrr. Two nights of my life wasted.
