rambo_tw Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Just wondering, what do you network managers do all day? I've set up a test machine using windows 2003 server but dont have the experience of managing a large amount of users . What does your job involve? What common tasks are you asked to do? It would be useful to know what you guys do so i can read up on it.

Dos_Box Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Hmm. The job description is really for a network manager. I am a systems manager and usually the role involves the running and planning for multiple networks and systems, often disparate. I could add 3 times the amount to that list.
damienharrison Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Just going by the Job Description title really,
FN-GM Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 What does the Network Manager do.... basically boss the techies around
bossman Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 @FN-Greatermanchester: I take it from your post you are a techie?
FN-GM Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Well at the moment I’m not working, but I have been doing some work at a CLC and they will be taking me on permanently soon.
Friez Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Job Description tends to differ from actual work done! Usually network managers and techies alike get asked to deal with pretty much anything that has a plug on it.
bossman Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 @FN-Greatermanchester: Not to put too finer point on it once you do get permanent employment (and i wish you all the best) i would not go around slagging NMs off as most are very hard working sometimes pretty stressed out guy's who are taken for granted most of the time.
dave.81 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 I'm a network manager and the only person in the IT Support team so add all the techy jobs to the NM jobs then add a bit more you'll be close to what i do lol
Lee_K_81 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 What does the Network Manager do.... basically boss the techies around Well yeah. We have to. We're the ones that get stressed at when jobs arent done, or done correctly. The word manager in the title is a bit of a clue. I have a habit of never shouting at my techies or asking them to do something that i wouldn't / couldn't do, and i'm the one that backs them up when people complain or when suppliers mess us about. The job of a NM / SM isnt necessarily 9-5 or even 8 - 4; i start at 8 each morning and am often here til 6. Much later if there is an event on, figured it out the other week that i do an average of 45 hours a week. Considering "Single Status" is coming in soon and based on 37.5 hours per week, it should be interesting. Having read some of your previous posts I'm sure you weren't having a go but.......

Guest aliv25 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 That was a very funny episode. But its typical of the support team to just say 'did you try and restart the computer?'...it works every time (well almost)
FN-GM Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 im only joking... clam down, obviously they do more than that. 1

Yeah - I try to do the same and my techie type does a good job of fending off some of the spam calls we get. I do get him to do our website stuff though 'cos he's a whizz at it and I couldn't hope to compete with him. HBJB
