I'm trying to export lots of xml files (Marksheets) into one large file, it needs to be in fomatted version (to have the upn).

Whats the best way/software to do this?

It says they are in excel format but then excel doesn't pick them up as so.

I may need to convert to text first then open/save in excel....but again what software to convert 800 xml files to text.....

What application are these XML files from - SIMS, or something else? Are you sure they were exported correctly, do they have the correct file extension - Excel might just be expecting a .xls rather than a .xml extension or something.

 

If you do have 800 XML files that you need to read in, process, and combine into one report then you're probably going to have to write a script to read whatever XML format the files are in. Most programming languages these days will have good support for XML, writing a parser for a particular format shouldn't be difficult.

@sted created a script that could take lots of xml files with computer info in and put it into one csv file.

 

It was something like this,

 

del all.csv /q

copy "*.csv" "all.csv" /y

 

put the above in a bat file and run in the folder with csv files. I seem to remember if your first csv (01.csv) is just the column headings but without any info it will make a nice form with headings.

It's from SIMS. Why do you want them all in one file?

What is on the individual marksheets? You could build a large marksheet template that has all data on it, and then export that.

I'm sure recently the restriction on the number of columns in a marksheet was lifted, but i've not tested it's limits.

Also, if you're taking a formatted marksheet, then combining them using tools will possibly break the formatting and make them unusable for importing data.

You need to explain a bit more about what you're trying to achieve.

Exporting from SIMS 800 marksheets to create one large excel. It has to be exported in 'formatted' to get the UPN number on.

Trying to create a template with all the data on - from the other 800...

Creating a large master marksheet would be better, and hopefully easier in the long run.

it only really works with simple text files xml/xls tend to have header/footer info that cant be done this way iirc you can try but i wouldnt hold my breath on it working

@Deckard - if you tell us what data it is you're trying to extract and what you want to do with it, we may be able to help. I'm sure it'd be possible to do exactly what you're saying, but there may well be a much easier way

I'm less experienced that everyone else is on here but you may be able to create a report in routines - design report then select the aspects and result set you want on your report which will the export into 1 excel file

 

The idea of creating a template with all of the data you want then exporting it sounds like the best and simplest solution
