Document Syncing

Hi all,

 

I am hopeful of getting some advise please...

 

The Bursar here works all day long on an iMac that is not connected to our Windows network other than for internet access.

 

He also has a MacBook Air which he takes everywhere with him. Both devices has Mac Office 2011 installed. The MacBook Air occasionally is used on the move so has a mi-fi usb adaptor.

 

He would like to sync files/folder between the two so it doesn't matter which machine he is working on, he has access to the same documents. He would like to avoid Dropbox etc.

 

I believe he is running Mountain Lion on both devices.

 

Someone mentioned Carbon Copy Cloner but I am not sure if that software can be used for individual folders/files or not.

 

Any advise is welcome.

You could just bind them to your Active Directory domain and make them mobile accounts, then their Windows Home directory is synced on every device.

Carbon Copy Cloner can be used to sync only specific files and folders, bare in mind though unless run manually, it can only be scheduled for every hour, which means is your Bursar quickly saves something on his iMac to go to a meeting, it won't be copied over immediately.

Do you know where the files get 'temporarily' stored while they sync together? Majority of the documents are of a sensitive nature....

You can change the settings on CCC to either store it in an archive or delete it when it doesn't detect it in the source. Really CCC is more for backup than syncing.

 

After a quick google, https://decimus.net/Synk/livesync.html seems a lot more like what you want

Why?

 

What he wants to do can be achieved easily using a service like Dropbox. I would personally recommend SkyDrive as this complies better with DPA.
