I need to get an audio card for our terminal server. It's been 15 years since I needed to buy a sound card. What spec should I be looking for to allow multiple students steaming audio? I don't think they call it polyphony anymore...

I need to first have some piece of audio hardware on the server, but from their I don't know what/how the audio is handled. 90 client connections x 2 audio channels each (youtube + system sounds as an example) would the sound card manage the potential 180 concurrent audio, and if so would a simple $40 sound card with one cpu on it do the trick? I have no idea how that's managed, and it's 100% possible that I'm over thinking this and it shouldn't matter.

This will be used by k-5th graders mainly for reading and comprehension. An audio track giving sounds, " a cow goes Moooo Moooo". I would hate for it to studder once 10 kids get on and it goes " a a a cow ow ow ow go o o o ssss Moo oo oo oo Moo oo oo oo "... The kids would never say anything and the staff would never know that it's doing it.

I might try tomorrow on a vm with no soundcard. I think it may be done in software which will be dependent on cpu and memory. If the cow goes moo what does the fox say? :)

I'm pretty sure it's handled by the windows stack and that you wont need anything fancy for normal audio over rdp. Best thing is to rdp into your server from a machine with audio then play a YouTube video with audio... I would suggest that

is suitable listening music from the above.

Enabling Audio over RDP on a Windows Server, sans hardware soundcard | KnowledgeLayer says that it isn't needed as I thought, and Do you need a soundcard in the server for terminal services? - Ars Technica OpenForum also agree's in places that no SC is needed for TS to rdp sound.

But as I say give it a go and see for yourself with you own set up.
