Time and attendance systems anyone know the latest ideas

We have a school of 1850 students and 250 staff.Registrations take place 4 times a day.Recorded electronically by the teachers.We still get a few wanderers during the day.Anyone use say a system where staff and students have chipped landyards access cards maybe through a turnstile or airport entrance :logged as on site:then certain locations say prox readers so its known they are in a certain room or area.

All singing and dancing so ,we can print off for fire drills/ alarms list of whos who would include visitors etc.Then other functionality that could produce all types of useful data.

We use a system from Paxton, Net 2 Access which was installed by Gough & Kelly, we have mag locks on the 'external' doors which are released by presenting your chipped Mifare card to a reader (which simultaneously clocks you in). We have it linked to our fire system which then prints a roll call list in the event of an activation.

 

Seems to work quite well, we only use it for staff and Post 16 at present and we've few problems generally. The biggest issue has been getting staff to use it, some staff are reluctant as they feel it is questioning their 'professionalism'.

 

You can set different zones with different times the doors will operate, for example we only give our Post-16 students 'Out' access at one particular door during school hours whereas the site team cards can access any door any time.

I'd be wary of using proximity detection to track student locations as it raises privacy concerns. One campus in the US had protests about an RFID system to track students as they hadn't properly raised it with the student body who took offence to the idea that they were being followed. Restricting it to enable access to a sensitive room like a computer lab full of kit is fine but can you justify the privacy invasion of tracking a student throughout the entire campus?
