Jobos Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Should be a simple thing but I'm unable to change the logon background. So far I have HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\useOEMBackground set to 1 In c:\windows\system32\oobe\inf\backgrounds there are 2 images, background1024x769.jpg and background1280x1024.jpg both under 165KB. I've rebooted but the logon wallpaper is unchanged as shown here. Is there a policy that would prevent the above from working?
SovietRussia Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 You need one called backgroundDefault.jpg, if that does not work - define it in Group Policy instead of direct registry. Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\Always use custom login background EDIT: Also, this is the folder path: C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds not c:\windows\system32\oobe\inf\backgrounds (How to Set a Custom Logon Screen Background on Windows 7) 1
X-13 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 This is the ONE piece of documentation I have! On the server: Group Policy > Computer configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Logon: Always use custom logon background Combine it with Computer config > Preferences > Windows settings > Files: Replace Source files: \\server\share\[folder]\* <-- Save the logon wallpaper you want there. Destination folder: %systemroot%\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds Note: This is on a 2008r2 server, it may be slightly different if you use a different server OS. 2
sted Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 not tried it but have a read How to Set Windows 7’s Login Wallpaper with Group Policies | Mike Crowley's Whiteboard 1
Jobos Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Thanks guys now I really do feel like a prat! As @SovietRussia pointed out the folder path had a typo I've added the GP now I need to find suitable wallpaper I can customize.

Our wallpaper is a block colour with our school logo, can't get much more simple than that! Edited November 27, 2013 by SovietRussia
linkazoid Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Didn't someone have a psd that had the location of the box defined so that the school logo would sit directly in the square box?
rj_mayer Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 We change the student wallpaper dynamically upon logon (within the KiX script), using an executable I found on the web. Personalised wallpapers are generated nightly, at the same time as photos are extracted from SIMS for use elsewhere (intranet, cashless catering etc.). The wallpaper includes the student's photo and name, together with the school logo. Teachers find this useful, allowing them to ensure the right student is using the correct login, but students are less impressed (!). We also use Microsoft's BGInfo to superimpose upon it live the machine info, so that the student can reference which box they're using in the event of needing to request support. As a little ditty, the wallpaper generator has the capacity for a seasonal image to be included, which I'll probably leverage in a few weeks...
sonofsanta Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Trying to tattoo the school logo to fit in the logon box just resulted in the "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to logon" message being unreadable for me, as that hovers over the same location. For logon backgrounds we have a seasonal theme, changing every quarter... I can bounce the PSDs over if you want to adapt them: 1
Reverend_Dan Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Win7Backg.zip is the file i got off deviant art a while back with all the boundaries on for windows 7, as other have said i push all the ones needed for our different screen resolutions with a gpo and the computer picks the best fit one

Reverend_Dan Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 The areas of different colour are places you should leave blank ie where the login box, accessibility options box will show i just copied them as an overlay layer in Photoshop and nudged a few things around to fit. It doesnt help with the ctrl-alt and del text though
