pc dropping packets when pinging websites

Hi all,

 

This is my first post so please excuse any mistakes or obvious questions etc. I am a fairly inexperienced technician so I am in learning a lot each day. My current problem is that in a school the business administrators PC is struggling to connect to websites and just hangs a lot of the time and is very slow. This happens intermittently. I have tried pinging pc's on our network and they are fine but when I tried pinging websites I found that I am losing up to 75% of packets. Any ideas?

try and ping google.co.uk if you still get packet drops then you're looking at an issue with the Internet connection. This would mean looking for the gateway device on your network. on your workstation from CMD do a ipconfig then ping the default gateway see if you get the same missing packets. (this means you have a local issue.) If you know where it is physically, give it a power cycle.

Hi Chazzy2501, Thanks for your reply. When I ping google.co.uk I get 75% packets dropped. It was the same when I pinged the default gateway. However it is only the one PC that is doing this all the others are fine. Is it still worth power cycling? Thanks

Have you tried taking the computer out of that room and then trying to ping websites? if you still get the dropped packets then its more then likely the network card, Try installing a new one or you can replace the motherboard.

Hi, Thanks for the advise. I change the location of the machine and the websites and emails seem okay. however when I try to ping the default gateway and google packets are dropping. I got the use to login on a different machine packets are still dropping. I have then noticed that when logged in as admin packets from another pc packets are still dropping. Are they one issue or two different ones?

It could be either, have you got a traceroute of your pings? also the other computer is it in the same location as the first problem computer was, if so then it could be a switch,
