do i need to take a faulty drive offline before swapping out for a new hard drive in a raid 5 configuration

using dells open manager and it tells me one drive is about to go pop so do i take it offline trough open manager or do i just rip it out and put a new one in.

never had hot swap drives before i have always powered down the servers

production server and need to keep it online if possible

Done it many times with no issue. Long long ago on a Perc3 I had to reboot the server and run the rebuild via the controller but them days are gone.

As I said, if you have space buy a hot spare. it stays redundant untill a failure happens and then becomes part of the array. This is especialy useful if you have more than one logical drive in a box of disks.
