mdench Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Afternoon We have an early 2008 mac pro quad core xeon that we want to upgrade from the 2Gb ram that is already inside it. Does anyone know what RAM is needed for this? Want to put some more in it so we can hopefully upgrade it to lion if possible. Cheers!
Arthur Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 800MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMMS. Do you have a quad core or dual quad core Mac Pro? www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/faq/mac-pro-early-2008-how-to-install-ram-backwards-compatible-with-older-memory.html manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA430/en_US/MacPro_Early2008_MemoryDIMM_DIY.pdf
mac_shinobi Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) When I had a 2008 mac pro a few years ago ( dual quad core 2.8ghz ) I got an extra 16gb of RAM and installed each FB DIMM in pairs ( so one ram module on top riser and the 2nd ram module on the 2nd riser in the same position ) Not sure if that will be the same so basically - so if you only order an 8gb kit ( 2 x 4gb modules ) then move the other memory modules to slots two on each riser card so would be something like the below Using the above image as reference, when I say Slot One ( I am going from left to right, so slot one being the nearest to the gold connectors and slot four being the nearest to the two finger holes ) Riser 1 : RAM Slot One : New 4gb Module RAM Slot Two : Original 1gb module RAM Slot Three : EMPTY RAM Slot Four : EMPTY Riser 2 : RAM Slot One : New 4gb Module RAM Slot Two : Original 1gb module RAM Slot Three : EMPTY RAM Slot Four : EMPTY Edited November 7, 2013 by mac_shinobi
ICTDirect_Dave Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Let me know how many you want and I'll see what I can do. We get quite a few old mac pros coming through here at the moment.
mdench Posted November 13, 2013 Author Posted November 13, 2013 @ICTDirect_Dave im looking at getting 2 x 4gb modules if possible
