Afternoon

We have an early 2008 mac pro quad core xeon that we want to upgrade from the 2Gb ram that is already inside it. Does anyone know what RAM is needed for this? Want to put some more in it so we can hopefully upgrade it to lion if possible.

Cheers!

When I had a 2008 mac pro a few years ago ( dual quad core 2.8ghz ) I got an extra 16gb of RAM and installed each FB DIMM in pairs ( so one ram module on top riser and the 2nd ram module on the 2nd riser in the same position )

Not sure if that will be the same so basically - so if you only order an 8gb kit ( 2 x 4gb modules ) then move the other memory modules to slots two on each riser card so would be something like the below

Using the above image as reference, when I say Slot One ( I am going from left to right, so slot one being the nearest to the gold connectors and slot four being the nearest to the two finger holes )

Riser 1 :

RAM Slot One : New 4gb Module

RAM Slot Two : Original 1gb module

RAM Slot Three : EMPTY

RAM Slot Four : EMPTY

Riser 2 :

RAM Slot One : New 4gb Module

RAM Slot Two : Original 1gb module

RAM Slot Three : EMPTY

RAM Slot Four : EMPTY
