ESXi 5.1 - Change VM network card type

So in the bad old days I set up some VM's with E1000 network cards. However due to some network related issues I want to change them to VMXNET3 adaptors.

 

What's the best way to do this?

 

I've seen some stuff about editing the VMX file in a text editor, is that viable and safe? Alternatively I could add a new adaptop to the VM, change IP settings over and then remove the old adaptor, this seems OK but is a faff.

 

So any recomentdations for the best way as as far as I can see there is no option in the GUI to just change it.

We did it the second way to be honest. Seemed the safest way when we changed a couple as we coudl ahve easily reverted to the old card if necessary,
