Dos_Box Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) I've got an Xbox 360 for the kids for Christmas and have a few questions about profiles and downloaded games. 1. If, for example, I have 3 profiles (mine + 2 children) and I purchase and download a game, will that game become available for all users on the system? 2. Can I make my profile an admin type account and apply/control the parental controls on the other accounts? 3. I have a 120GB HD for it. Will this be enough or will it fill up quickly baring in mind they will mostly be playing children's games? 4. Are there any other gotchas I should be aware of when letting kids on the Xbox 360? And I think that's about it. For now Edited October 24, 2013 by Dos_Box
JJonas Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 all about parental controls Xbox Parental Control | Xbox Family Settings | Xbox Privacy - Xbox.com
featured_spectre Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 1) the game will need a live account to attach too and be logged in, so provided everyone has live, you're set 2) yes 3) too small. I filled 120GB with 10 games, including DLC, saves, and that was for myself and the mrs 4) Xbox parties, they can be rowdy and when kids are involved, become a hot bed of bad language.

Does that mean any downloaded game WILL be available to all users on the Xbox then? Sorry, just need to be clear on this before I configure more accounts.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 4) Xbox parties, they can be rowdy and when kids are involved, become a hot bed of bad language. Not to mention the language and abuse they'll encounter if they start playing online multiplayer. Playing Halo online was a lesson in Modern swear words as much as it was fun high-octane violence!
Dos_Box Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 They will NOT be gaming online! (age 7 and 9) Primarily they will be playing Minecraft and various Sonic and retro games.
featured_spectre Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Does that mean any downloaded game WILL be available to all users on the Xbox then? Sorry, just need to be clear on this before I configure more accounts. The game will download to the xbox and you need an account with live signed in to use the game. If you dont want to give gold to your kids, and they want to play the game, your account needs to be logged in, not theirs. To play a downloaded game on an xbox, any account that plays it, must have live.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 To play a downloaded game on an xbox, any account that plays it, must have live. They should be fine with silver though? I don't have gold any more but all my download work fine so long as the machine is connected.
featured_spectre Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 the account that buys it is fine, connect another silver account and it wont work. Most games downloads now are saying you need live to work, especially kinect ones and games with gold.
Dos_Box Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 So I would be better with one single account all can use if I want them to play all games?
edutech4schools Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 hmmm that is odd as my son was playing a game I downloaded. I have gold and he has silver.
Jamoire Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 As far as I know any account should be able to play a downloaded game on the Xbox it was originally downloaded and purchased on, if you install it on any additional Xbox's you must be signed into the account that purchased it to play. Essentially you get one user license and one machine license for each purchase.
JJonas Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Now we have Games with Gold im constantly juggling downloads to make space, thinking of getting a 320 GB external from ebay
DMcGuigan Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 AFAIK (And I've been abusing this system for years) The account which buys a game can play it as long as they're online on ANY OTHER console. They don't need to be connected to Live to play on the console it was originally purchased on. The accounts that are on the same console can play the game, as the game license is stored on the console. This works offline, though the accounts in use were Xbox Live Golds (though that shouldn't matter) This essentially means, you can have Person A buy a game on Person B's console, then go home and download it on theirs, so A+B can both play the game together.
PeggleStar Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) Also if their playing Minecraft and want to play the multiplayer they are going to need a Gold account. So if you create accounts for the 7 and 9 year olds they would need Gold on each. I think it would be better to have just one account in your name as they can still have their very own world in Minecraft each so they won't need to share worlds and they can also use their own unique world in multiplayer if wanted. I know you said they won't be going online but as it stands Minecraft multiplayer it quite harmless providing they "only" allow their friends to play and no one else which is easy to setup. And I think that's about it. For now 1. No. 1 account per game. 2. Yes. 3. No. That'll fill up quite easily imho. However, it's your call should you wish to test it. 4. Yep, as stated before, parties. Also... there can be some... 'filth' if they accidentally scroll left or right instead of playing the game straight away (ie movie adverts and such). If they're not going online, then silver should be enough (i think with silver you can download patches?) One last thing. Geometry wars. Get it for them.
Dos_Box Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Thnaks everyone so far, but can you all agree on downloaded games vs accounts issue as it seems to be 50/50 about what I can and can't do.
Fleetwood Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) Content licenses are stored/linked by console, not account. If you've downloaded, say, Halo 3 on your console - all of the gamertags/'profiles' stored on that console will be able to play it. If you then have a new console, you will need to transfer your content licenses (instructions in link below,) to that console - otherwise it'll only be the account that bought/activated the download of the game that can play it. Source: Digital Rights Management | Xbox Licence Transfer | Xbox DRM - Xbox.com ------------- As the others have already stated, the main thing to watch out for when letting your children within the 'online realm' of Xbox 360 is the communication features (Voice Chat, Messaging etc.) A solution for that is to disable/block them: Xbox Home > Settings > Privacy > Change Settings > Customize. You then have the world at your fingertips, and can set various features to Everyone, Friends Only or Block. Alternatively Xbox have been helpful to provide presets (Adult, Teen, Child) and lists all the Allowed/Not Allowed to the right for you within each one - I think you have to select them first to see the changes listed. Hope that makes sense and clears up any concerns or questions for you @Dos_Box and more to the point I hope your children have fun playing on it, a lovely present for them!
