Google search

Hi , I have recently upgraded from Win 8 to Win 8.1 , and have only just noticed this problem so it may or may not be anything to do with my issue.

So any way when I do a Google search for any thing ,the results are displayed in a long vertical form on the screen making it almost unreadable, so for instance if I search for security installers in Huddersfield , each search result brings a list of websites up , but the "blurb" from each website will be one or two words per line ,as opposed the being all in one paragraph.

This only happens if I navigate to Google via my default browser (ie11) ,if I go to Virgin Medias home page and use the Google search from there ,every thing appears as normal.

We have a fix. Whilst in IE11, press ALT+X, navigate to Compatibility View Settings and uncheck 'Use Microsoft compatibility lists'.

 

This leads us to believe that this is an error on Microsoft's part, not Google's. Microsoft is telling IE11 to display Google in compatibility mode, which renders Google broken. Either way, for users who don't know how to access the compatibility settings, or don't have the permissions to, this is a serious problem for IE11 and needs to be fixed.

Microsoft have made a few changes to IE11's compatibility list, so you can re-enable the option listed above without it affecting Google.

Microsoft says the issue has been fixed. “It appears Google made some changes to its search engine that temporarily impacted the way search results rendered for some browsers,” a Microsoft spokesperson told TNW. “We have already made the necessary adjustments to ensure customers using Internet Explorer are not impacted.”

 

It’s not clear what exactly Google changed, what other browsers were impacted, nor what exactly Microsoft had to adjust. It’s likely, however, that Google’s site has now been removed from IE’s Compatibility List.
