dhicks Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 An article on the Misco site says the average is six. All-in-one PC (also used as a TV) Tranquil PC Server (Xen VM host) NUC Server (OpenStack host) iPad Laptop Router (an OpenWRT instance running on a MicroTik RouterBoard RB450) Assorted Raspberry Pis I guess that's an average of 3 each although, for some reason, my girlfriend has never shown much interest in either the Xen or OpenStack servers or any of the Raspberry Pis.
Anjelica Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 None - a power surge fried the router on Monday night!!!

elsiegee40 Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) Internet Enabled devices is probably a better way of putting it than Internet Connected devices For the 3 of us: 2 Laptops 1 All in one 3 smart phones 1 iPod touch 3 dab radios 1 Sky HD box 1 xbox 360 1 wii 2 tablets 1 kindle 1 Rasberry Pi And that goes up when the eldest is home from university Edited October 19, 2013 by elsiegee40
SYNACK Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Let's see, just me, two tvs, Xbox, blueray player, two tablets, three phones (one that is actually connected to a phone network) and two laptops and a desktop pc. That's 12 for just me.

SYNACK Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) And you probably have the worst internet connections of all of us out in NZ @SYNACK... are you using the entire country's bandwidth?! Most of it, yes I do get web sites in 14.4kb/s type mode on occasion, title and background... heading... first paragraph... second. It is why tabbed browsing is so useful here, you start up the computer in the morning, open a few dozen tabs and by morning break they are all ready to read Oh, and I forgot my arduno microcontroller with Ethernet shield, that thing can tweet pointless data with the best of them as well, I think it may be a celebrity Edited October 19, 2013 by SYNACK
fiendishlyclever Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 What router did you get? I gave up on the Virgin Superhub as wifi was always dropping out. Tried a variety of routers in the cupboard like the D-Link Virgin used to give out. In the end I bought a WD MyNet N750 purely because it was on special offer at Amazon. It is dual band which is probably more important than the make/spec - so that usage gets spread out over 2.4 & 5 GHz (although we don't have that many devices that support 5Gz yet...) I've got an 8-port hub plugged into the router which is just about full - handily my router is located in an alcove behind the TV so consoles/streaming boxes with a wired connection can be connected directly. I have been tempted many times to have a wired network fitted... 1
mac_shinobi Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I have been tempted many times to have a wired network fitted... I'd like to know how to do that properly and neatly as hopefully going to try and get our own house in the next few years so would come in handy
IrritableTech Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 My sky router deals with requests from: 4 iPhones 3 iPads 3 Laptops 2 Raspberry Pis 1 Smart Tv 1 Blue ray player 1 Squeezebox 1 Sky box 1 Wii 1 Xbox Wireless supplied by 2 Unifi UAPs. 4.5 devices per occupant.
jamin Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 4 laptops 2 phones 1 ipad 1 raspPi 2 Consoles 1 Mac Mini 5.5 per person But this may be bias due to the laptop / multimedia setup in the shed (-:
XiJ Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I'd like to know how to do that properly and neatly as hopefully going to try and get our own house in the next few years so would come in handy Every time we decorate a room, we chase a channel out of the wall - put in some trunking and cat5. Or under the floor. I'm sure my house is held up by cat 5! 1

XiJ Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 What about getting cat 5 between rooms or from downstairs to upstairs ?? Theres always gaps In our house I have a link from a switch in cupboard upstairs and over the stairs. It comes down through floor board and out of the ceiling downstairs then down in the wall to a Switch in the living room under the tv. There's a small bit of cable showing but it's in a place I can box in without anyone knowing. In our house at least I can normally get into cavity between ceiling and upstairs floor boards without major issues Although for the dining room, I'm just going to use power plugs. Why not just buy my house and it's done for you - I'm trying to sell it 1

XiJ Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Pm sent, but is there a knack to getting the cat 5 to go down a corner under the floor board and down through the ceiling etc? PM replied. Tbh there's normally a gap like I said - or still a small hole. Room to room is easy enough. I only have 1 link between down and upstairs and that comes out at the bottom of the stairs so isn't in eye line and is just a tiny bit of cable on the corner. In newer houses with plasterboard walls / cavities it's probably even easier. 1
