Sheridan Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 Time to move AV Providers or book a support call with them that you will most likely need to keep chasing them for or about ? Sophos support is a pile - it follows the same set routine for every call. 1) Log call 2) Answer numpy questions (i.e have you tried reinstalling) 3) Logs are requested 4) Find the solution yourself as there is never a response from that point. 1
Sheridan Posted October 15, 2013 Author Posted October 15, 2013 Problem solved, in a roundabout kind of way. Installed AVG and it works perfectly now! 1
Michael Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Brand new laptop, fresh install of Windows 7 (actually 3rd or 4th fresh install!) and once everything is installed, joined to the domain the laptop boots up and stays at 'Please wait', and thats it. After much testing the only way it will boot, is in safe mode with the network cable out. I searched around and found a MS KB about the WMI, but the hotfix didn't do anything. I've also seen comments about the NLA service but disabling that made no difference either. I'm about to punch through the screen! As if 'please wait' is of any bloody help in telling you why your laptop will never boot again! This is the first time in my IT life where I about to simply give up, and put Windows XP back on. Have you tried Safe Mode with Networking out of curiosity and not just plain old Safe Mode?
Sheridan Posted October 15, 2013 Author Posted October 15, 2013 I've tried all ways - the only way that worked is either Safe mode with no network cable in, or Last Known Good - that works if you do it the first after sophos installation. Alternatively removing sophos sorted it out nicely. Renewal is due soon and I've had years of sorting out bugs and errors with them so its looking good for an alternative. 1

Vipre or NOD32 , possibly Avast ? @VeryPC, @CPLTD or @ICTDirect_Dave Maybe one of these can help with the moving AV Providers ? 1
Haptic Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 We'd be glad to show you what AVAST can do. PM if you'd like to see some pricing Joe
wroberts Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 That resets winsock not the tcp/ip stack Netsh int ip reset c:\logs\logfile.txt Resets the tcp/ip stack By any chance does your machines have a policy that installs AB Tutor or some form of mirror client on the machines ? I only ask this as we had a similar issue when isntalling AB Tutor via gp, the process would hang and then would prevent the network card operating properly. The comment from mac_shinobi is correct for resolving this issue as we have had to run it on around 20% of the machines in our School (total of 1300 machines) Things to try Boot into safe mode and then run IPCONFIG If the machine gives a 169 address or Just hangs with Windows IP Configuration in the DOS Prompt then this is the issue that has just been mentioned and then run the following commands netsh winsock reset Ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew and for good measure do a dns flush then reboot and all should be well !
Sheridan Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 After removing Sophos and installing avg it's been fine since so I don't think its a networking problem. It's not the first time Sophos has crippled some of our pcs. Once too often we've had issues where it's been the culprit! 1
