Internet Problem

Hi all,

 

Got a friend with a brand new Windows 8 laptop. Got all the latest drivers installed and the BIOS is up to date. The browsing history and is also clear.

 

He is at uni with several other people, all the other laptops in the same area with him are all fine over Wireless browsing the Internet with no problem. However, on his laptop he says the Internet is really slow. I cannot think why it is slow after trying all the above. He's using Google Chrome.

 

Also tried flush dns and

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset reset.log

 

Anybody know what the problem could be? Maybe a reload would sort the problem?

Has he got any AV/AS/AM

He brought the laptop two weeks ago.

 

He has got anti virus software and ran a scan and it was fine.

 

Not sure what you mean by AS / AM.

If he is using the AV which came with it then its most likely Norton and there is your problem solved (kill it with fire). Win 8 comes with virus protection out the box nowadays so start with the AV removal. If that fixes it then he can see if he is happy or wants to look at other AV solutions.

 

If its not that then give it an msconfig to see if there is anything funny running.

He's quite clued up with PCs, so I thought he would of removed it. However, it turns out he hadn't. Anyway, when he gets home tonight he's going to remove it and let me know. Many thanks!

Microsofts Security Essentials does a good job, but always worth a scan with Malbytes.

That's didn't solve it.

 

I asked him to restore it back to the factory settings using the recovery partition and he did that and said it was still slow. He's going to ring HP. I think it could be a hard drive problem because the restore took a couple of hours.
