Smartboard USB intermittent connection

This seems to be happening more and more and Toshiba laptops seem to be more likely to be a problem. But is it the laptop, usb-serial convertor or the IWB controller?

 

Any ideas would be welcome.

I'm guessing you have already done these but: -

 

Have you tried using a different USB-serial convertor and a different IWB?

 

Have you tried other make of laptops? Does the same happen to them?

 

Does your school have a IWB that can be connected to by USB-A-USB-B? if so does the problem still continue?

 

Have you tried updating the Firmware of the IWB and\or the IWB software on the laptops?

This is Windows installing the wrong driver. Find the device in device manager, it will be called Smart USB Cable or USB to serial convertor i think. Update the driver, browse, find the smart folder > drivers > x86 or x64 > you want the driver starting STIX/STIX64

 

Sometimes I also had to install the 10.8 SP1 patch and repeat the process to get this working.

Have you tried other make of laptops? Does the same happen to them? I'm trying to find another make. All of ours are Toshiba.

Have you tried updating the Firmware of the IWB and\or the IWB software on the laptops? We are using v9.7 because of other unrelated issues. I could try a new version.

No, that's the first thing I checked. It just wouldn't work with the generic serial convertor driver. I'll try putting the very latest of everything on a computer and see what happens. Edited October 2, 2013 by laserblazer

Have you tried a powered USB? I had Dells that werent giving out enough power for the boards and that solved it.

Good thinking, it is a very long cable, shame I haven't got any.

They are very cheap from t'internet. I think mine cost less than a fiver and it works fine

OK, here's what I've done. Upgraded to the latest version, tried a different controller and cable, removed and reinstalled the drivers. When changing the controller I noticed the waggling the wires from the smaller connector caused the light to toggle. So, I'm thinking an internal wiring fault. Has anyone taken a 500 series board apart? Oh, and I did put a powered usb hub on it.
