Unable to run Windows Update on a new build XP SP3 PC

Afternoon all,

I'm in the middle of building a new (and final) XP image for our older PCs.

I have an XP SP3 disk with the drivers, latest version of IE and .Net all slipstreamed into it. I've been using this for a year or so.

Everything installed as it should, so Windows Update time. This is where things go a bit wrong.

I keep getting the same error (see attachment). I've googled and tried various fixes but nothing seems to resolve the issue.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm guessing that I've either done something or I've missed something.

Answer on a postcard to....

I would use Microsoft Update instead, you will get other products as well.

I had this issue at one stage, but its years since i have used XP and forgotten now how to fix it.

Is the Windows Update service running?

Doesn't the Microsoft update website need ActiveX controls? Mayhaps it's was denied and isn't asking again.

[Not Googling... Entire suite thinks it doesn't have genuine Windows... ]

There's a Microsoft Fixit tool available for that, iirc MS broke their own files for the update mechanism :p

Try MS update first and if you get an error code Google that and it should lead you to the fix.
