Best backup software

Anyone any recommendations for backup software?

 

I am currently using Server 2008 R2 built in back up but am after something 3rd party and better.

It all depends on what you have to backup, is it just server os and files or does it host SIMS/Exchange etc? Personally we use Backup Exec and then agents on the relevant servers. but it all depends on your setup and disaster recovery plan

Veeam is the best if you have virtualized environments.

 

Otherwise I would use Acronis myself to take an image.

 

Backupexec does the job if you want file backups but is very bloated and out of date these days.

Not sure I want to take images, sounds good but am unsure.

 

The environment is standard physical DC, no exchange or SIMS

 

My recovery plan.... well I have another post on that, but I am still having issues trying out a dummy run on a non production server at moment. Getting a system state backup only is proving tricky for some reason (file system of backup storage I think)

 

So recovery plan question I cannot fully answer, but already the issues I come across with windows back up makes me want to move to 3rd party software.

 

If I was to image with acronis, I suppose doing a dry run would be equally as difficult if I was trying just to restore system state to another machine?

 

These test recoveries are proving to be tricky. Having to think of ways to recover to a non production server without causing a conflict with the production server.

 

But thanks for input I will look at these products.

There's no such thing really it depends on your needs and budget to some extent.

I Personally recommend the Datto Hybrid cloud devices - backup on site to the appliance and it syncs itself out to the cloud.

I like virtualisation for some things, but others it makes me fearful!! recovering my hypervisor if I had to

 

What do you use to backup your virtual server hypervisor?

 

I also seem to have some issues using citrix vdi in a box also, performance issues, so am unable to utilize the hyperv server I have to host a RODC as am concerned about more performance issues on the vdi vms on there

I use Hyperoo for my Hyper-V server backups.

What do you use to backup your virtual server hypervisor?

I use ESXI with all my clients and have detailed notes of the configuration. I can get a ESXI host rebuilt quicker from scratch then it would be to work out how to backup and restore it - and in all honesty I have never even thought about it.

 

For the VM's on the Hypervisor you have either things like Hyperoo as plexer says, Veeam PHD virtual, Acronis 9 or you have in server backups which is what Datto does which I have mentioned above.

 

I have multiple datto unit's with my clients and they rarely have issues.

I use Veeam on my Hyper-V machines.

 

We have redundant Hyper-V hosts just in case the entire server goes down.

Just make sure the server has at least ok specs.

 

Went to a school on a mayday call the other day and they had a server worse than our file server with 6 virtuals on. It wasnt liking that.

It back's up the individual vm's so if you need to restore to another server it's easy enough to do.

 

Just install the client and run a restore.
