Fingers crossed someone advise...

 

I'm getting quotes in for companies for produce a website for my business. I'm clueless when it comes to web design and the tools used for putting a site together.

 

One of the companies has informed they would put the site together using wordpress using bespoke templates.

 

I need to know if people rate Wordpress for a company website.

 

The charge for the company designing the site is approx. £2,000 (this excludes a few additional costs).

 

They charging for the following:

 

Wire-framing/Design

• Wire-framing the entire website for approval of

layout

• Design of all page templates

• Design of any web banners required

 

1 service Development

• Development of all bespoke page templates to

agreed designs

• Installation and setup of Wordpress CMS in

conjunction with bespoke templates

wordpress is a blogging platform, a couple of friends of mine who are devs HATE it when its used to build an entire site from as its not supposed to be used for that

does make adding content easier and management

What are the preferred alternatives?

Wordpress started as a blogging platform but all sorts of sites use it these days. There are themes for blogs, themes for magazine sites, themes for company sites, ecommerce etc etc

 

I'd have no qualms using Wordpress for either a company or a school site. It can produce some incredible looking sites.

As @sidewinder said above, it was a blogging platform but used more and more for websites now, eg Metro Newspaper use it for their website (Metro.co.uk: News, Sport, Showbiz, Celebrities from Metro Newspaper). I've used it to make a few sites as well.

Yep, it can be made into a pretty decent website nowadays.

 

Does that value also include the IP for the code for the templates / layouts used?

I agree with the above Wordpress can be used to create some excellent sites, I use Joomla as well also a good platform to create a site with, we subscribe to yootheme at work which produce templates for Joomla and wordpress

I can vouch for Steve's Wordpress sites - he has put together some excellent ones for organisations I'm involved with some even for free and others at a very reasonable price.

Wordpress is a great resource for creating websites with an easy to use backend for adding content. I have created many sites using this working from scratch creating custom templates and graphics.

WordPress is indeed very good.

 

Pros: Excellent range of plugins available; wide control of the website

Cons: Can be difficult to use for the non-technical; can be a target for hacking if proper security measures are not in place; if PHP is updated, the theme can break

 

£2000 sounds expensive.
