UK government in talks to ban (certain) small phones

By small, we're talking really small.

While Samsung is dead set on making increasingly larger phones like the Galaxy Note II, and Galaxy Mega 6.3, other small-time manufacturers are going for phones as small as car key remotes which have drawn the ire of the United Kingdom government.

Easy to conceal in body orifices due to their small size, and simple to bypass through metal detectors due to low metal content, these car key fob-like phones have found a niche market with prisoners in the UK.

Possessing a mobile phone inside prison is of course an offense. Last year alone over 7,000 phones and SIM cards were found in possession of prisoners in England and Wales.

Made in China, these phones were likely not even put through product testing from UK customer protection organizations, putting innocent (or otherwise) customers at risk of electrocution.

The National Trading Standards Board of UK has ordered all retailers to remove car key fob-like phones from their shelves. Prisons have been informed to tighten security checks to ensure such devices don’t make onto premises where they could be used for communicating with the outside world.
