Has anyone got an old server sitting in a cupboard somewhere wanting some love ?

 

I need to migrate some servers off of my main ESXI box so that I can update it to version 5, currently the server is on version 4.

 

I am wondering if anyone has got an old server kicking around that will run VMware Free that I could use to back off these VM's .. Ideally for the price of shipping ? I'd even arrange courier if someone can box it and give me the sizes and weight!

Not got any workstations sitting around? A midrange workstation will have more grunt than most servers going begging, stick a 2TB drive in it (or whatever size you need) and you've gotten yourself a capable swing-server.

Had the same thought, I've got an i3, but it has no ram, no HD, no optical drive etc etc and I have no spares kicking around!!

 

Yeah, I know what you mean also if I put it on a workstation someone is likely to turn it off.. Ideally I was after something rack mounted Like a Dell 2950 or a HP 360

Do you need to move them off while upgrading? I moved my last ESXi 4 machine over a couple of weeks back, just took it down in a quiet period and did an in-place upgrade. Took 20 minutes or so.

I could do, but I need to do it out of hours as the server is one of the main ones in the DC, once the servers are migrated I can fire them up on another server. I could do an in-place upgrade but with this being our only server I don't want to take the chance that something could go wrong especially when this is a crucial server to the Phones and network etc. I also don't know whats going to happen regarding licensing when I install version 5 - as the version we have at the moment is a paid for license yet im put version 5 free on the box to upgrade it and I think I may run into difficulties there.

 

So I need a server so I can keep things running. Once I have migrated the servers onto another Server, I can keep the VM's running!

When you upgrade, the VMs themselves aren't touched. Worst case, you can even reinstall ESXi fresh and just re-add the VMs in the hypervisor from the attached storage.

 

To be fair - better safe than sorry! Cheapest bet for this is an HP Microserver that you could keep kicking about - VMWare certified and cheap. Will run a few VMs happily. Problem with many old servers or even many workstations kicking around is that hardware virtualisation is either not supported or not able to be enabled in the BIOS.

I may just do that if I dont get any other offers.. not in a mad rush but need it done!

 

I thought I'd ask on here as if someone has a server they will know whether it can run Virtualization or not, I've looked one bay but you can never tell, and alot of people on there dont know but a couple of HP's have caught my eye if they stay cheap.
