Well it was sims server upgrade time.

P2v the sever for backup

Backed up the data to nas

Copied data to another storage area I'm paranoid about loosing data.

Backed up mls eclipse.net

Format drives on server added nic and ram

Banged on server 2012

Installed SQL

Copied data back

Got sims FMs and discover working

Got mls eclipse working on 2012 whoop this took longer than sims

New admin machines imaged and ready

New data points installed.

Backups set up (need a new nas at some point)

For once I am relaxed

Roll on next week.

My week included this - me thinking I lost all of Taylor Wimpy payroll data (some 50'000 employees), wiping out their contracts, sales, subcontractor, and nominal ledgers. Spent 3 days restoring it. And I found the reason why it all went to pot...someone was on the system when I was, and did
rm -rf *

on their unix box as a superuser.

Rather you than me. How many pairs of shorts did you go through this week.

I'm pleased because I have got things done with limited knowledge. Cpd is not that good here

That's just like the Pixar story where someone nuked half a movie then they found out the backups didn't work either :p

Did a similar move myself: got ourselves a pair of refurb servers, one destined for SIMS. Went to ESXi it, found out the new version of ESXi hypervisor has a "fixed" limit of 32GB of ram. Bah - ESXi off, 2012 straight on, so now its just a dedicated MIS server with 48GB of RAM in it. Now tell me it's bloody slow, I dare you! ;) The other 24GB of ram that was in it went into another (older, esxi 4.1) box to upgrade that to 56GB.

Then whilst faffing about with the second server, found out that we bought ESXi Essentials for that older server (before my time), and also found it covers us for 3 physical servers, and upgrade to 5.1 is nada! Woop woop!

Not redoing the SIMS server though, it's working too well as it is ;) Lots of consolidation done this week! And like yourself, lots of P2V involved (what a handy thing that is!) and lots backups of the SIMS server! (last ever Tape we'll use, P2V, copy on my PC, copy on USB drive)

Yes, that's why I'm particularly happy. I was using the free version and didn't even realise we'd paid for Essentials :) 5.1 reinforces a hard limit (it wont even boot into ESX with more than 32gb present) - the limit was still there in 5.0 but a bug meant it worked anyway.
