1 Share per user?

Simple question really. In the days of NT4.0 we did 1 share for each user folder. In my last change of storage architecture I had yeargroups split across servers 1 share per year group. Now I'm moving to a new NAS with an SSD cache layer for user folders and all my users will be on a single clustered NAS end point.

 

I could just create 1 "//my_nas/home" share. I'm confident that windows 7 folder remapping will be happy with this solution and I can used mapped network drives to their folders for old apps.

 

Has anyone done or read anything related recently. Is there any problem I'm not seeing or advantage to the old 1 user 1 share approach?

I cant see any, it would should overcomplicate things doing it that way.

There is no advantage, in fact its a pain to manage I think of 1 share 1 user.

 

For last 10 years I think we have had one folder i.e. \\servers\users\%username% which works miles better and easy to admin.

Like MatthewL says, do it that way, or just divide it up a bit like i do here......

\\server\Home\YearofIntake\%username%

and

\\server\Home\staff\%username%

 

for example mine looks like: \\server\home\2013\%username% for this years year 7s.

 

That way accessing the folder isn't bringing up a list of 1400 home folders in one go

We've had no problems with sharing a 'home' share and creating a folder for each user. Much less bother to manage than the old, traditional method.
