mattx Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 Yup I installed 6 in the last few weeks, lovely machines. The HP ESXI image gives you greater ability to monitor hardware from ESXI (its almost the same as installing Standard ESXI and the HP offline bundle). I have not installed ESXi for years - last time was in my old job just before I left [ 36 months ago] so I'm bound to be a tad rusty. I've been using Virtual Box on my laptop but now hoping to get some test VMs on this server. Nothing like a bit of a challenge...... Its only got 32GB ram and 3x500 GB HDs but I should get at least 3 VMs from it.

Domino Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 We normally buy the HP branded SD card, as thats the only way HP will support the install: HP 4GB SD Enterprise Performance Flash Media Kit - Secure Digital cards - HP: 580387-B21 but I'm sure it's just a rebadged something else. Also, it's not a hot plug port, if the server was on when you put it in it'll need power cycling. Does the inbuilt smart start replacement doohicky see it? 1

I've never had an issue with SD Cards, we have always used Kingston SD cards and never had a problem. With regards to ESXI the basic parts of the client. Its very similar its just the extended features which are complicated. T

Copied the ISO over the to datastore, does not want to know, tried to get it to see the ISO on my laptop - does not want to know. Can't get it to boot from the local USB DVD drive plugged into the HOST either. Mad.

Have you set it to be connected on boot?

Ignore - having a bit of mad moment...... [ needed to select the boot menu on the VM to point to CD drive which in turn was then pointing to the ISO I uploaded earlier..... ]

But a standalone ESXI is free

mattx Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 Bloody stupid, I went to DL it again and in generated one which when I entered it I get the: Product: VMware vSphere 5 Hypervisor Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU) License Key: XXX Expires: Never Product Features: Up to 32 GB of memory Up to 8-way virtual SMP Which is fine - wasted an hour going around in bloody circles. Anyhoo - got a 2003 and 2008 server on it working well.
