best practice for changing username for current homedrive folder?

Hi, I have had to change the name of a teacher who has rather inconsiderately gone and gotten herself married! Ok, so i have changed her name by 'rename' in AD, changed her alias in exchange and made sure that this is the new default SMTP address, changed her name in sims but now i just need to change her home folder name without getting rid of all her contents so that she can still accessit through the LG at home. Am I overthinking this? i seem to be blank on this one! Any help please asap.

Just simply rename the folder itself and change the path on the AD account.

Thanks both. I need the folder changed for a webpart in sharepoint to work. I have done as you said but now it says, when I log in as her that it cannot connect to said drive.

the profile path is \\schoolserver\cfh$ yet the actual path is D:\users\STAFF\cfh?

Will it just be easier to recreate the whole account after copying what is in there and putting it back afterwards?! Surely there is an easier way....

If you re-create her account she will lose ownership over any folders or files she has created elsewhere.

Looks like you've shared the home folder directly, rather than mapped to a subfolder of a share. In this case, after renaming the folder you will also have to change the share name.

I'd always keep home folders named the same as usernames personally. If people leave it makes it harder to house clean if you can't easily see who owns a folder just by looking at the name of the folder. I'd recommend to rename the folder as FN-GM recommends, update the ad path so it gives the user full permissions and then just update the owner of the folder applying the ownership to folders and files within.

 

I've jus moved 700 user areas over to a new server and I couldn't of bulk re-pointed in AD using the \\servername\userhome\%username% varible if there were inconsistent folder and usernames.

The title of the thread says best practice. It wouldn't be best practice to leave the folder in the old name. What is the IT staff leave and the new person is doing a tidy up and doesn't know the previous name of these staff? What happens if you loose the permissions to the folders. You use a script to repair them but it wont resolve the username because it no longer exists. If they migrate server you might have issues remapping the folders again.
