Called into school this week to discover why staff couldn't get on network - server (hp ml350) had died the previous week. Red lights indicated psu failure so quick phonecall to hp - part delivered next morning with an engineer waiting to fit said part. Very impressed had visions of a difficult warrenty call to subcontinent with me having to prove server was in fact broken.

The engineer told me about iLo on the server does anyone else use it?

Same as AlexB, looked at it briefly but thats it. For the number of servers we have, I don't think it is really needed by us as yet. Give us a few more years and a few more servers and then it will probably become more useful - especially as it would mean being able to get rid of normal KVM stuff and use the ILO stuff instead.

Well, as the iLO is integrated in the hardware on most HP servers, they aren't really charging much for it - as their servers are around the same price as their competitors without that functionality. But yes, they do work with a tiered licensing scheme for the software (same as with the ProCurve Manager for switches - but it is worth it most of the time).

On all of the latest HP Servers I have sold this year ILo has been enabled and free of charge.

The only limitation has been that without the purchase of the Advanced ILo pack you have to quit Ilo and switch to RDP once boot up is complete.

All of the basic ILo functions are accessible including BIOS setup boot from remote devices, mapping of remote resources etc.

Interestingly enough, Advanced ILo2 software (£180 ish) can be found and purchased on EBay for as little as £20 !!

This is because it is included FOC with the HP Storage Servers and people don't seem to use it. Do a regular EBay search you might be surprised.
