A few days ago, I had to disable PXE support on my SCCM server for a bit. This worked fine, it disabled itself and I could do what I needed to do.

Now, I'm trying to turn it back on again but the WDS service doesn't appear to be installed!

All I'm doing is ticking the PXE box on the Distribution Point properties dialog, and allowing unknown devices and allowing things to connect to it.

What am I missing?!

Well, to fix this, I tricked it.

First, I made sure it was all 'off' in SCCM. And renamed the RemoteInstall folder

I installed WDS myself as a role. Then enabled the PXE stuff in SCCM. Rebooted.

Then, I disabled the PXE stuff again, and it correctly removed WDS. I again renamed the RemoteInstall folder, and rebooted.

And finally, I re-enabled PXE again, and voila, it installed and populated the RemoteInstall folder correctly.
