pfSense + Squid or just Squid

Hi,

 

We used to have a Squid3 box that provided filtering then passed it to the upstream LEA filter. We then switched to a pfSense box running Squid, its been slower than our old configuration.

 

Today it decided to have a fit and die, it now no longer boots without me manually editing a bootloader file, so decided to rebuild it.

 

So what is best, flat linux with Squid3 or pfSense again?

Pfsense is a firewall.

Squid is a proxy which can use addons for filtering.

Pfsense can have squid as an added package.

Firewall for incoming traffic, proxy for outgoing web traffic.

I would always have a firewall and a proxy, but these do not have to be on the same box.

If you already have a firewall then just use linux + squid.

Pfsense is not generally slow though, maybe it was because it was on the way out?

Smoothwall and its derivative ipCop have filtering & firewall functions. Both free and pretty easy to set up.

We have decided to re-build pfSense, it gives us the support we need really, and is always there for the future if we wish to do firewall and routing etc.

I use straight up Squid 3.1.x configured with Kerberos authentication and an upstream proxy. Works great...
