Where to start exchange server 2003 mail on ipad

We have an exchange server on site that delivers email via outlook and outlook web access

This is working fine

 

We have a reverse proxy so staff can access emails from home

Emails.schoolname.lea.sch.uk/exchange

 

What do I need to do be able so sync with the ipad mail program as the users can access the owa just fine on the ipad but I would like the email and calendars to be synced via the mail app.

 

Email server was set up 9 years ago and never touched it since.

Why don't you have a look at getting office 365 through the live@edu program. This give you free off site exchange. You are now able to do active directory syncing. You also get access to sharepoint online.

That was looked at but if our Internet connection goes down then our users will not be able to email each other internally.

So an on site server is what we are going for.

 

We are upgrading soon so I wanted to find out what I need to get iPads connected.

The iPad, iPhone and Android use PushMail via ActiveSync. This allows you to send/receive e-mails and update your calendar via the iPad for example.

 

Exchange 2003 supports ActiveSync as discussed here, however on a serious note if it's not been touched for 9 years it's probably totally out of date!

 

Unfortunately there is no direct migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2013. You need to install Exchange 2007 or 2010, then 2013 so it's not a quick job! This is why Office 365 is a much more attractive option.

 

Surely if the internet connection keeps dropping this needs to be investigated and more to the point, you couldn't send e-mails anyway? You could argue an iPad with a WiFi/3G backup to Office 365 would be the better solution?

Yes lots to look at.

 

Hey our exchange box is running on a old del gx60 with 512 meg of ram.

 

It has been rock solid

 

Only down time was when the schools power went off and we had to get a massive generator in.

 

So this summer we will be moving to either 365 or new exchange.

 

As for email when the Internet goes down.

 

Staff would still be able to email internally.

 

The Internet connection is being changed shortly too.
