Find my iPad - some advice please

Hi

 

We would like to use the find my ipad feature on our college ipads but dont want an itunes account one them (setting them up via configurator so its not needed) - is there a way to use this without having an itunes account setup? Or, is there anyway we can setup one itunes account for all the devices in our entire college so we can just have one central login for them all? If not, can anyone recommend an app that will do this?

Check out Meraki.

 

It's free mobile device management, that does much the same as Apple Configurator, but through the cloud. In addition you can track the location of your devices on a lovely map!

Thanks - having difficulties getting Meraki to work with our proxies unfortunately. Any others?

I don't know how far along you are configuring your iPads. But the only possible way around that I see is:

 

If you setup Find my iPad on one iPad, then back it up. You can then restore that backup to all the iPads. Hopefully it'll restore the account details too! I can't say for definite as I've not specifically tried it for Find my iPad. But I configured almost 200 iOS devices in a similar way to this.

 

I don't know of another solution. We too had some issues with proxies and Meraki, but it's well worth the effort.

Sounds like I might have to have a chat with you re Meraki too Lewys! Do you use a non transparent proxy at your place - as we do and were told that Meraki dosnt work with them.........

The problem I can see whith what you are suggesting is that I'm fairly sure you can only have 10 devices on any one itunes accoun,t so if it did retain the account details (and I'm not sure that it will as it dosnt seem to with things like WEP keys) then I could see that being an issue (that and the fact we wanted to avoid the whole itunes account thing in the first place)

Transparent here I'm afraid.

 

Our issue was the various ports Meraki needs, in addition to needing access to some AWS services. This provides all the information needed in that regard.

 

Sorry that the backup/restore idea isn't the solution. Other than some sort of MDM solution I don't know what to suggest!

You do not need an iTunes account to use Find My iPad?

 

You only require set up to iCloud, although you would have to get a list of all the accounts set up to know who is who's, easy!
