Desktop Wallpaper by GP - use JPEG instead of BMP?

Just looking at our teacher/student wallpapers that get rotated termly.

 

They are all around 2meg in size stored in Netlogon and saved as BMP.

 

If 90 students log in first thing thats 180meg copied over the network.

 

I remeber wasting a good part of a morning trying to use a 230k JPEG wallpaper but failed miserably.

 

Before I waste any more time, can someone else on vanilla network please confirm its possible?

 

Any other gp settings needed? Active desktop etc

I haven't had any issues with JPG or PNG wallpapers on Windows 7 or 8.

 

Unless you are still using XP, there isn't any need to use BMPs since Windows will automatically convert the images to JPGs anyway and save them to the following locations.

[b]W8[/b]: %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper

 

Edit. I use GPP to copy the wallpaper(s) to the local HDD and then point the Desktop Wallpaper GPO to a path on the C:\ drive. Unless the images are modified, GPP shouldn't copy the files again.

The only thing ive found is that the background doesnt show fully as an image. The imahe starts appearing once you start moving windows around, so annoying. Never had this problem on XP.

Just out of curiosity where do you store yours? I would rather they all get loaded on mass from a share on a NAS array than server/netlogon?

Thats what I found in testing. It wouldn't fill the screen and also they would suddenly get a black background even though the wallpaper is applied as you can see it in the preview view in control panal/Personalisation.

What do you choose for the wallpaper position (fill, fit, stretch, tile, center) and what's the resolution of your images? Does the black background only appear on monitors that have a different aspect ratio from your wallpaper?

The image is stored in a location that all users can read but not write to.

 

I think my setting is set to centre and fill, i think. The resoluton is set to the same as the desktop 1280x1024.

I have a GPO which points users to a share for it, don't copy anything.
