S_Hannah Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Hi Folks, Seems we have been gathering a very large collection of video files over the years on the shared area, and it has gotten a little messy. I was looking for some form of video storage solution which would be online like a mini YouTube where we could upload and manage the videos, moving the off the shared area and onto this. We can create a new server instantly if we can find the right solution. Only limitiations are that, as usual, there is no money. Open Source solutions anyone? Thanks Stuart
XiJ Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 I do love plex and use it for my home media solution. Is your internet upload good enough to serve video over the net that way?
XiJ Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Reading the OP again, plex wouldn't work of you want to move the video's offsite
S_Hannah Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 Thanks for the prompt replies. I would host this internally and only allow access to the videos from inside the network. I know the infrastrucutre would support this. Regards Stuart
mac_shinobi Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 http://m.alternativeto.net/software/plex/ Just as some possible alternatives. Apparently the windows version of plex requires a lot more ram. Not sure if thats still an issue
CyberNerd Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 For TV recordings we use MythTV and have a link into our VLE so that staff play TV shows on a browser through Moodle. I'm sure MythTV could be extended to add pre-saved files. The issue you'll have is with cataloging them.

Thats basically what I want to do, collect all of the videos up, upload them to the website and then staff can search for them as they need them. Regards Stuart
CyberNerd Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Thats basically what I want to do, collect all of the videos up, upload them to the website and then staff can search for them as they need them. Regards Stuart In that case: Install MythTV MythTV, Open Source DVR Install MythWeb MythWeb - MythTV Official Wiki Install Mythtranscode Mythtranscode - MythTV Official Wiki Install MythTranscode Moodle Plugin https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=mod_mythtranscode Buy An ERA+ license. At that point you've got a TV recording service - users loginto mythweb and schedule TV programs to be recorded, then students can play them back on their iphones etc on Moodle. The bit I'm not sure about is how to upload and catalogue your old collection. I think you'll need to upload them to mythTV then get mythtranscode to encode them to a suitable format for VLE playback. Let me know if you get this done as I'd like to do that bit here as well. right now we just tell staff to upload it to Google or Youtube.
Marci Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 PHPMotion. Chuck it on a webserver et voila - local YouTube clone.
