We are more than likely going to implement a BYOD program in the very near future, and so we are going to have to provide a VDI solution to allow the students to run our SOE on whatever device they bring.

So far I have evaluated Citrix, and the VMWare options. These are both very nice solutions, and seem to fulfil our potential requirements.

Obviously Microsoft using AppV and RDS is an option, especially with the licensing discounts we get in .edu. (But as I am finding with SCCM, the amount of Man-Hours it is costing in developing a solution from the ground up, it would have been almost just as cost effective to have purchased Dell KACE or Trivoli for the price I have paid my tech to work for 6 months on setting up our working SCCM solution)

Has anyone used the Quest VWorkspace ? (recently purchased by Dell I believe)

Is there any other provider I should be considering?

Citrix VDI-in-a-box at my last place - very easy to setup :)

Used App-V extensively as well, took me a while (about 4 days solid work) but in the end I had 90+ applications in it after which I never had to worry about if an application was going to be installed/ready on a PC. Even had things like the full Adobe CS6 suite in it.

Do you have any guides as to seting up app-v and creating applications? Im currently looking at app-v but struggling to find any decent guides.

I did a guide on how to App-V Adobe CS6 a while back and have a few other bits and bobs on my blog - App-V | my world of IT

Best thing you can do though is hit Youtube :) there are lots of good guides up there especially for things like App-Ving Office.

Be careful with App-V 5.0 because folder redirection breaks it!

So will as i use a redirected My Docs, Start Menu, and Desktop etc, it will not work properly? Also are you using v5.0 SP1?

Correct! my investigations are if you redirect through GPO My Documents, Desktop or AppData it breaks App-V 5 and that includes SP1 - that's what I have tested it with.

I found a German TechNet webpage that said they are aware of this and are planning an update in SP2 - but when....?
