Just thought I would run this past you lot before I go down the wrong route. I have to move the contents from E: drive ( containing all roaming profiles and shred areas ) to new Drive H:. My quick Idea is to do a backup of E: and then restore all the data to H: and then simply do a drive letter swap for H: and make it E:.

 

I looked at the GUI Robocopy and did some tests to see if it would replicate all sharing info. this gave mixed results.

 

so any pointers / opinions would be great.

Moving retains NTFS permissions. Copying does not. However, we had to update the shares by hand... Can be a pain if there are al ot

That plan will work. Backup - Restore is one way. I usually find that the data set is so large that it can't be done even over a weekend, so that which is restored is already different to that which is live.

 

Here is the robocopy command I use. You may want to consider either removing the recyle bin exclusions, or expanding them to include *.tmp and ~wr* files too.

 

robocopy SOURCE DESTINATION /xd "$RECYCLE.BIN" "RECYCLER" /e /zb /copyall /dcopy:t /MT:16 /r:3 /w:1 /LOG:"c:\LOGFILE.log"

If the Source is in use between the initial pass and the switch over, then

 

robocopy SOURCE DESTINATION /xd "$RECYCLE.BIN" "RECYCLER" /e /purge /zb /copyall /dcopy:t /MT:16 /r:3 /w:1 /LOG:"c:\LOGFILE.log"

re-syncs it.

 

This assumes no one has been messing with ACEs on files and folders as this is not picked up on the second pass.

 

 

Make sure that you have the following two hotfixes installed:

A robocopy command updates DACLs incorrectly in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

and

An enterprise hotfix rollup is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Thanks for the info.

Job done. Backed up then restored to new drive and swapped out the drive letters and hay presto it worked without probs.
