lmgtfy Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 A member of staff has seen a LED scrolling message board on a recent school trip and would like something like that outside their office. Now we have couple of Xibo based display screens across the school but they only have a couple of hundred pounds to spend so I can’t really recommend they get a TV screen instead. All the ones I find online seem quite old in terms of technology using a serial cable to update and the software looks really old. Does anyone use them and can recommend a particular make or model. The one I have been looking at is this one AV21567 - -- - LED MESSAGE BOARD, MULTI-COL, | CPC only because we use CPC can get it fast and it looks ok but the instructions are making me think twice just because how complicated it looks to use. It’s not strictly ICT but it does have a plug and does connect to a computer so I have to research these things I guess. Any help or alternative suggestions would be great Cheers Chris
Hefferzzzz Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Why would they want that? Never used them or had need for LED message board but these guys seem to have a large selection - Single Line LED Sign - Single Line LED Signs - Single Line LED Display - Single Line LED Displays
pete Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 We have one. Don't buy one. The software is terrible and ours needs a serial port or an usb-serial converter made of braided unicorn hair in order to work well. It's also not great in terms of communicating messages longer than "Y11 football on tonight" because no-one can be bothered to wait around for a full rotation of events. A xibo screen for us costs roughly 150-300 (we build and source our own), usually a low-power SFF device and a decent-sized screen. If yours are pre-packaged appliances, then making up the difference centrally* probably isn't viable. *the school gets another information point, the staff member gets their content displayed near their office.
lmgtfy Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 I think you are both right if I can persuade them to invest in a little more they could have a proper Xibo setup. @pete Can you recommend a cheap LCD TV/Screen that you have used. I was looking at something like LG 42CS460 42in FHD TV - Televisions | Ebuyer.com with Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 Nettop - Nettops | Ebuyer.com to run it unless I can get together something from old parts.

MatthewL Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 We used the Jayex ones in the doctors surgery when I was in the NHS, they do do a network one these days but you still need to run it off a PC. 1
